Gonna need a bigger boat...

This is a 48x60" I'm working on for an upcoming solo show at Gallery 51 in Meredith, NH on lake Winnipesaukee this summer. I have been thinking of painting a whopper for a while and this seemed to be a good opportunity. I painted an 18x24" version of this about two years ago. I really liked the way it came out and wanted to explore the shallow water in this on a larger scale. The 18x24" painting sold three days after exhibition so I never really had a honeymoon period with it. She's been on my mind ever since so it's time for a rebirth on a grander scale...Or as Brody put it in Jaws, "Gonna need a bigger boat".

You are off to a great start on this one! Is this a raw umber underpainting? Just curious. I do a transparent underpainting to start my work and always interested in how others do it.

Hi Deborah,
Yes, I always do a raw umber under painting first...I'm actually documenting this painting with photos to eventually do an extensive how-to on the process. I love to know how others do it too.

That's an incredible size...I am working on a 100cmx80cm which is pretty darn big, but you certainly have your work cut out Todd. They certainly take on a life and presence of their own when they are eventually hung on a wall...best of luck with it. Oh..by the way...some lovely photos of Ireland if you wanna come see..hee hee

What a great painting! And ALMOST life size! I love all the detail you've kept in the painting. Often the larger the work, the less detail. This is going to be a wonderful addition to your show. And congratulations on your solo show!
